Advantages of CPV

  • Unlike the other utility grade solar technology such as CSP, which is very water intensive, use of CPV does not require water. Given the fact that best locations (high DNI) are in arid or semi arid areas, zero water attribute (except for small amount for periodic cleaning) is great blessing for water starved country

  • CPV technology requires least amount of land; its requirement is about 60% compared to flat plate or 35% as compared to thin film per MW of capacity. Under the current dispensation of land scarcity for any industrial purpose in India, this is a major advantage

  • CPV systems are on high mount structures and therefore most of the land except under footprint can be alternatively used

  • CPV has the lowest ‘energy’ pay back (net energy generated after deducting that went into inputs) amongst all other solar technologies on offer

  • India is endowed with enormous solar ‘irradiance’; CPV is best placed to convert it into power most economically

  • India has the necessary industrial ecology to deliver CPV systems. Its successful development and manufacture will give solid fillip to industries in motor manufacture (trackers), aluminium extrusions, steel fabrications, power electronics and electrical switchgear among others. It will generate entrepreneurship and local employment in EPC, installation and maintenance services

  • CPV will be a major contributor to the Government’s rural electrification program and thus will contribute to electricity (computerization) in schools, medical centres (PHCs) and agricultural pumps

 

Why CPV from Chroma Systems ?

Development of CPV (specifically Chroma Energy's) will lead to technology developments in Power Electronics (Inverters for grid connected and off-grid solar power) designed also for outdoor operations, precision glass moulding for secondary optic elements, development of precision tooling for glass moulding, development of motors for long, uninterrupted precision operations in extreme conditions (very high MTBF), development of anti reflective coating material and application technology, software for remote energy management among others.   • By the time Chroma Energy is able to offer a CPV system, the size of the market under JNNSM will be 15,000 M

  • Of this market size, CPV as a technology will be able to garner a conservatively estimated potential 20% of this market, which would amount to 3000 MW

  • Chroma Energy being one of the first movers in this field with a superior technological offering will be able to garner conservatively a potential 30% of this market, which would amount to 900 MW

  • This will be installed over the next 10 years after demonstrating the capability of the technology and its advantages over the next 3 years

It is situated in an ecosystem that has enabled Tata Motors to present to the world – what was previously deemed impossible – a car priced at Rs. One lakh – the Nano. CPV as a technology requires much lower amounts of capital expenditure to scale up as compared to any other PV technology. The knowledge gained through this project will allow Chroma Energy to be able to meet the challenges of scaling up to the projected market size and beyond, based on the size of the solar market at that time.

Our analysis also shows that there exist markets in the Middle East, Africa that have the advantage of proximity and similar irradiance conditions when compared to India. Chroma Energy will aggressively go after these markets to increase its market share.
